Blake Eastwood Case 1 – Book Review

Spoilered sections are marked by subtitles! Short read.

Blake Eastwood Case 1 is Argo Ashton’s debut book on Amazon and will be the first of what will become the Blake Eastwood series. It’s a very promising debut and a fantastic book in its own right; here’s why you should buy it…

Who is Argo Ashton?

Before I get into the book itself, it’s necessary for me to mention that he’s a contributor to this blog! If you want a feel for what kind of author he might be before subscribing to his new series, then you could check out Argo Ashton’s Book Reviews.

He’s also a longtime friend of mine, so I admit there will be some bias!

An Introduction to Blake Eastwood

You could read the official synopsis on Argo Ashton’s Books, but hopefully you’re here for my take as a fan of fantasy. Blake Eastwood for me is an urban fantasy, blending the modern day with a touch of magic.

Book one draws inspiration from some classic railway mysteries (like Orient Express), as the reader joins Blake on picturesque train ride. It’s luxurious but also doomed by adventure, intrigue, and the chaos of magic.

What Does Blake Do Differently?

Since the popularity of Sherlock Holmes, it has been popular for the detective to have their Watson. One thing I really like about Blake Eastwood is that we escape this by having more of a team. It’s nice to have a mystery with a greater range of character relationships.

The Main Cast of Blake Eastwood: Case One

Having already sung the praises of detective fiction with more of a focus on relationships, let’s take a sneak peak at whose involved in Case One!

Blake

Our main character and superordinary detective! He’s ready to solve crimes and bring justice, sometimes with his fists. His favourite fashion is looking like he’s just stepped off a film noir set.

Tess

Ex-cultist and Blake’s client. Despite her anxieties–or maybe because of them–she’s determined to be a part of the mission. She enjoys turtle necks and a fresh change of clothes.

Phil

Current cultist tasked defending the mission objective. He’s a brute with a wandering heart. Can his loyalties be swayed?

My Favourite Part of Blake Eastwood Case 1 – Spoilers

This would have to be the progression of the character of Phil. In this book, there are heroes and there are villains, but there are also those who aren’t quite sure what they are. This is Phil. Somehow both a brute and sweetheart, Phil is my favourite character and I really hope he returns for Case 2, coming to e-books in October!

To Conclude

It’s a short and exciting adventure, a perfect palette cleanser if you’ve just finished a long series like Mistborn or The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. Even better, Ashton has promised book two and three will be soon, so now is the perfect time to join Blake on his first published adventure.
