The Things We Leave Unfinished – Book Review

No spoilers, harsh review (DNF)

To put it simply, The Things We Leave Unfinished is a book that I will leave unfinished.

It’s not a book that I would have chosen for myself. It was a gift for someone I know, and, seeing it unread, I felt sorry for it.

Spying it was Rebecca Yarros, I was less pitying and more intrigued. This is the author of the fastest-selling book of the last two decades, and this book has a 4.3 rating on Goodreads.

I figured I’d give it a go.

I’ve never before read Rebecca Yarros, and I’ve been thinking about trying Fourth Wing for a couple of years now. The main item dissuading me is a petty dislike for the main character’s name. My desire to give it a go despite that is in the claims that Violet Sorrengail struggles with hyper mobility—an interesting disability for a fantasy heroine.

So, I tried the first two chapters of The Things We Leave Unfinished. It’s a standard romance, reads like a holiday chick flick—literally, it reads more like a script than a novel.

I’m very not into it.

I’m well aware of the mistake it would be to disparage women’s fiction—so I’ll simply say that there are better written, more engaging chick flicks out there… or at least ones that get off to a more promising start. I’ve even reviewed some on this blog!

Perhaps Rebecca Yarros’ style just isn’t for me, but she’s certainly pleasing hundreds of thousands of readers worldwide, so don’t just take my word for it!

I won’t be attempting Fourth Wing any time soon though.
