A spoiler-free guide.
Loved the Avatar the Last Airbender animation? You might enjoy reading the novels. They’re fast-paced, adventurous, and easy to read, with plenty of insight into the history that shapes Aang’s world.
In this post, you can learn what you need to know before reading these novels (if anything), where to jump in, and where the series is going next (no-one really knows!).
Book 1: The Rise of Kyoshi
Book 2: The Shadow of Kyoshi
Book 3: The Dawn of Yangchen
Book 4: The Legacy of Yangchen
Book 5: The Reckoning of Roku
Book 6: The Awakening of Roku
Book 7: (Release date not yet confirmed)
The Series Overall
While the original animation is geared towards children (but enjoyed by all ages), the novels are more suitable for teenagers and up. I would describe the text as fairly easy reading, but not for young children, and the themes are handled with a little more darkness than the animated series.
The original animation and the live-action television series are not prerequisites for reading any of these novels; however, I would recommend watching the original animation before picking up the Roku duology. This is because the central villain from the series gets some page time in Roku’s novels, and—without spoiling the novels too much—these scenes just work better when you know the end of that character’s arc, as shown by the animation.
Readers don’t have to read this series in order, though you should read the first book in each duology before reading the second. To clarify, you could read either the Kyoshi, Yangchen, or Roku duology first. If one Avatar in particular stands out to you as particularly interesting, then go ahead and start with them! Have fun!
Lastly, the main author changed in 2024, as Randy Ribay took up the keyboard to continue the series from F. C. Yee. The series will continue with a seventh book written by Ribay. Little else is truthfully known about this project, though many rumours are circulating!
Each book features more than one perspective, though most tend to have a clear central character, and are written in 3rd person.

Book 1: The Rise of Kyoshi
Release date: July 16, 2019
Author: F. C. Yee
My rating: 5/5
This duology is the first in the series, and it’s still my favourite. Judging by the Goodreads scores, it’s the public favourite, too.
Kyoshi is the people’s hero, following her own moral code closely to bring justice to evil-doers of all classes. This book covers her ascent through society as her potential is revealed.
Explore the Earth Kingdom and the people who survive it!
This duology also features in my Pride Month Reads list.

Book 2: The Shadow of Kyoshi
Release date: July 21, 2020
Author: F. C. Yee
My rating: 5/5
While the Chronicles of the Avatar have all followed a duology format, this was not obvious when this book was first released, and I greatly wanted more of Kyoshi’s story at the end. To some extent, I would say that this speaks to a dissatisfying ending, but it should also tell you how skilled the book was to leave me wanting more.
Go beyond the Earth Kingdom in this world-trotting adventure of discovery!
The Shadow of Kyoshi delivers a darker, grittier sequel to The Rise of Kyoshi.

Book 3: The Dawn of Yangchen
Release date: July 19, 2022
Author: F. C. Yee
My rating: 4/5
Yangchen might be the most flawed of our Avatar protagonists so far. Dreadfully in touch with her spiritual side, Yangchen’s body is a hotel for the souls of previous Avatars, which seem to come and go as they please.
Despite her struggles to retain mental superiority, Yangchen is an accomplished Avatar. Can she maintain that status, or will the plots surrounding her finally become too much to bear?
Escape political intrigue with Yangchen and her waterbending companion, Kavik, as they navigate the truth and the lies.

Book 4: The Legacy of Yangchen
Release date: July 18, 2023
Author: F. C. Yee
My rating: 4/5
Discover a darker side to Yangchen as she further perfects her air bending against the threat of a combustion bender. Also, companion Kavik features heavily again—look, he even made it onto the cover!

Book 5: The Reckoning of Roku
Release date: July 23, 2024
Author: Randy Ribay
My rating: 4/5
You’ve probably already encountered some of Roku’s wisdom in the ATLA animated series… well, in this duology, you can meet Roku when he’s young, naive, and a little spoiled!
Like Kyoshi, Roku must broaden his mind to learn the other elements. First stop? Air.
Together with a young Gyatso, Roku learns about grief, brotherhood, and letting go.

Book 6: The Awakening of Roku
Release date: December 30, 2025
Author: Randy Ribay
My rating: 4/5
Read the full review of The Awakening of Roku
After a fiery end to The Reckoning of Roku, this book gets off to a somber start that soon sees Roku travelling to the eerie frozen tundra of the North. His next mission is to master water bending.
In the North, Roku will be challenged like never before as the actions (and regrets) of his past catch up with him.
This novel also features in my Pride Month Reads list!

Book 7: (Confirmed, but release date unknown)
Release date: Unknown
Author: Randy Ribay
It has been confirmed that Randy Ribay has signed a contract to produce another book in the Chronicles of the Avatar series.
Given the existing structure, fans theorise that the next book will focus on a duology featuring a new avatar, and the most likely protagonist is thought to be Avatar Kuruk. He’s been referenced in each of the duologies, but is yet to feature in a novel of his own.
